Prof Dimitriou is currently a Professor in Pediatrics and Neonatology at the University of Patras Medical School (since 2011) and Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, NICU, PICU (since 2013) at the University General Hospital of Patras, Rio, Patras, Greece.

He obtained his medical qualification from the University of Athens, Greece, and subsequently gained clinical experience in pediatrics through his work in the general pediatric wards, pediatric A&E, and the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). After completing his specialist training in neonatology in Greece, he spent twelve years as a Clinical Fellow and Senior Registrar, Lecturer and L. Consultant in the Department of Child Health at King’s College Hospital in London, where he obtained a PhD in neonatal respiratory muscle function. In London, he participated in the daily clinical work of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and gained extensive experience in the management of complex neonatal problems.

After returning from the United Kingdom as an Associate Professor of Pediatrics and Neonatology at the Medical School of the University of Patras in 2005, as Head of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and later as the Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics, NICU, PICU at the University of Patras, he was involved in the daily diagnostic approach and clinical management of hospitalized newborns and children.

He has an extensive educational, organizational and research work. During his working at King’s College, London / King’s College Hospital, he regularly participated in the teaching of undergraduate and postgraduate medical students, medical and nursing staff, as well as in the supervision and teaching of postgraduate students pursuing MD and PhD degrees. He was Tutor in Pediatrics to students of the Medical School of King’s College, London, UK.

At the University of Patras, he teaches Pediatrics and Neonatology to medical students of the University of Patras and participates in the clinical training of pediatric residents, trainees specializing in Neonatal Intensive Care – Neonatology, as well as fifth- and sixth-year medical students during clinical bedside rounds.

He has participated by invitation in the educational programs of other Pediatric and Neonatology Departments in many hospitals across Greece. He has been an invited speaker at more than 40 international and 70 Greek conferences, while he has participated in more than 300 presentations at Greek and international conferences and has received awards for many of them. He has supervised many doctoral theses, served as external examiner of a PhD thesis in Australia, and is a reviewer and member of the Editorial Board in approximately 40 international medical journals. He has participated in many Greek and European Committees and administrative positions. He served as President of the Hellenic Neonatal Society and Treasurer of the Union of European Neonatal and Perinatal Societies (UENPS). For many years, he was President of the examination committee for the specialty of Pediatrics and for the subspecialty in Neonatal Intensive Care – Neonatology. He is a reviewer of international research programs, including those of the Medical Research Council (UK), the University of Western Australia and the Government of Hong Kong. He has participated in and served as a member of the Steering Committee in many international multicenter studies. He is a member of the European School of Neonatology (ESN) – ESPR Board (a multi-disciplinary team of experts from around Europe dedicated to neonatal research and training).

His main research interests include lung function and respiratory muscle function, optimization of mechanical ventilation, neonatal infections, late preterm infants, IUGR infants, genetic risk factors predisposing to RDS, perinatal factors predisposing to allergic diseases in childhood, cystic fibrosis, RSV infections, morbidity of newborns of obese mothers and public health.

He has published over 250 peer reviewed articles, widely cited by other authors. His name is included in the Stanford University World's Top 2% Scientists list (Version 7, released Sept 2024).
